I’m not sure how many Christian Ministries, Evangelists, Preachers, and “Social Influencers” there are on Instagram, but I imagine there’s a lot. I mean, it seems that for every one I find, there’s another 30+ (or more) just like them. Now on the one hand, it’s very encouraging to see so many people using the platform they have to tell the world about Jesus! But on the other hand, I can’t help but feel that some of it is a little superficial, even a little misleading. And dare I say, maybe it’s nothing more than a show.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I know that for a lot of these people, what they’re documenting is their day to day life. And that’s great! But when all that’s portrayed are all these mountaintop moments, I wonder where the shots of life in the valley are? The place where fear takes hold, where doubt sets in, where hope takes a backseat in the face of hardship and tragedy. Everyone loves the view on the mountain but it takes actually walking through the valley to get there.
I’m by no means trying to offend or ridicule anyone, but a page full of whitewashed photos of perfect people, with a sign that says “#blessed” on it, just doesn’t always seem genuine to me. The measure of success in Christian life isn’t about how many Instagram followers we have, but how well we’re being Jesus’ hands and feet. How good are we at loving others? How about forgiving? Are we giving grace? Maybe it’s just me but I don’t want to just put on a show. I want to be a genuine, fully committed follower of Jesus Christ.
